Expert Review

An expert review refers to the evaluation of a prototype or product’s usability by experts while taking current standards and principles into account. This method usually consists of two components: a heuristic evaluation and a cognitive walkthrough.

In the heuristic evaluation, experts independently assess the usability of the product based on current standards (heuristics). The ten heuristics by Nielsen (1995) are often consulted for this step, though newer rules or checklists can also be used.

In a cognitive walkthrough, the usability experts put themselves in the role of the user and analyze the user-friendliness of typical tasks and processes within the product.

Once complete, the identified problems with its usability are compiled, prioritized and expanded by actionable steps to eliminate them.

Nice to know:

The scope of the expert review can vary depending on the product and content. In addition to a comprehensive usability check, it is also possible to carry out a quick-check to identify improvements that are fast to implement (so-called quick wins).

Another option is to combine an expert review with an accessibility check. While the expert review evaluates the general usability, an accessibility check ensures that the product can be used by all. Combined, they enable a holistic optimization of the user experience.
