How the Thermomix® turned us into cooks...

What was our goal?

The Cookidoo® web app is the home base for the Thermomix® by Vorwerk and helps the user in searching for and organizing recipes. We supported Vorwerk’s international team in the conception, creation and implementation of the Cookidoo® online platform.

In doing so, we wanted to achieve a uniform look and usability for organizing recipes on all available platforms like the web app, native app and the Thermomix® device itself. Special attention was paid to the web app, which is also used to prepare weekly menus and shopping lists.

How did we proceed?

It was really exciting to get to know this famous device and to gain personal experience of its usability. Of course, we introduced the Thermomix® to our colleagues and families and provided them with borscht, fruit dream with chocolate crumbles and beet root smoothies. Through cooking and talking with them we learned a lot about their expectations of the Thermomix® which ranged from a simple mixer to a voice recognition interface à la Enterprise.

But how was our approach? After an initial analysis of the existing website, we gained insights into existing problems to then develop first prototypes with fixed usability issues. For this purpose, we redesigned the navigation structure and visual guidance to improve the user’s understanding of the recipe sorting on all corresponding devices.

In a self-contained system we iteratively planned and designed the categories “organizing”, “planning” and “shopping”. It was really important to coordinate our ideas with the international team during this process. For this exchange we used digital collaboration tools like Invision for prototyping, Overflow for user flows and Confluence for documenting our user stories. The pixel-perfect design of the interfaces was jointly managed and implemented using a “living styleguide”. This made it possible to ensure high design quality and design fidelity for all designs that were created in different teams.

What was the result?

With the release of the new Thermomix TM6® the improved version of the Cookidoo® web app was released and enhanced the user experience of planning and organizing on all devices. But not only that. Because of the international collaboration we could discover new tools and work with them. We met inspiring people and gained a lot of experience in further developing an exciting and legendary product.
